ALFN Local Food Club:  The Market is Open!

Dear ALFN Members,

I hope everyone is having a relaxing weekend. If you were at pick-up yesterday, you may have noticed that we crossed a tipping point into spring production. Fresh strawberries have arrived! The market is open for another week of spring bounty.

An ALFN member reminded me yesterday that the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has their new list of the Dirty Dozen out for 2016. The list ranks produce that has the highest amount of pesticide residues still on the product. The list is helpful to have on your phone as you shop for products in box stores. EWG also has a list of the top clean products. Here is a summary of the two lists from their website:

Dirty Dozen

  • More than 98 percent of strawberry samples, peaches, nectarines, and apples tested positive for at least one pesticide residue.
  • The average potato had more pesticides by weight than any other produce.
  • A single grape sample and a sweet bell pepper sample contained 15 pesticides.
  • Single samples of strawberries showed 17 different pesticides.

Clean Fifteen

  • Avocados were the cleanest: only 1 percent of avocado samples showed any detectable pesticides.
  • Some 89 percent of pineapples, 81 percent of papayas, 78 percent of mangoes, 73 percent of kiwi and 62 percent of cantaloupes had no residues.
  • No single fruit sample from the Clean Fifteen™ tested positive for more than 4 types of pesticides.
  • Multiple pesticide residues are extremely rare on Clean Fifteen™ vegetables. Only 5.5 percent of Clean Fifteen samples had two or more pesticides.

While I’m thinking about food research and useful shopping filters, I would also suggest you check out Monterey Bay’s Aquarium app call Seafood Watch that provides ratings for types of fish and methods for fishing that help consumers make a decision when shopping at a food store. The app works on smart phones, and I have found the app helpful when trying to cut through the various tuna choices. Check out their app here: Seafood Watch

Apps and Dirty Dozen Lists can be helpful when we can’t trace the origins of our food. But when you order from ALFN’s market, the growers are right there. They are our local neighbors. From urban farms to ranches in northwest Arkansas, our growers bring products backed by transparent production methods. You don’t need a third party app when shopping through ALFN!

Take care,

Kyle Holton

The Low Down on Strawberries

AAhhhhhhhhh – STRAWBERRIES – one of the much anticipated pleasures of spring! Besides the delectable flavor that is the basis for so many dishes and desserts, there is much to be celebrated, and heeded when it comes to consuming them.

Many foods commonly consumed in the U.S. are valuable sources of antioxidants. But researchers have recently ranked the 50 best antioxidant sources among commonly eaten foods and found strawberries to be quite exceptional. When total antioxidant capacity was measured against a uniform amount of food (100 grams, or about 3.5 ounces), strawberries ranked 27th best among U.S. foods. In addition, when only fruits were considered, strawberries came out 4th among all fruits (behind blackberries, cranberries, and raspberries). However, since many foods (for example, spices and seasonings) are seldom consumed in amounts as large as 3.5 ounces, researchers also looked at common serving sizes for all foods and their total antioxidant capacity. In this evaluation based on common serving sizes, strawberries came out 3rd among all U.S. foods including spices, seasonings, fruits, and vegetables! (In this analysis based on serving size, only blackberries and walnuts scored higher in total antioxidant capacity.) When we hear the word “strawberry,” we might think about a very commonplace fruit. But the antioxidant capacity of strawberry is anything but common! Ooptimal strawberry ripeness can be judged by color. You’ll want to consume your strawberries when their amazing pinkish-red color is most vibrant and rich in luster.

On the down side, strawberries have officially replaced apples as the most pesticide-ridden produce. According to the 2016 Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) Shopper’s Guide, nearly all “conventional” strawberry samples—about 98%—tested by federal officials had detectable pesticide residues. In addition to that, 40% of all strawberries had residues of 10 or more pesticides detected.

“It is startling to see how heavily strawberries are contaminated with residues of hazardous pesticides, but even more shocking is that these residues don’t violate the weak U.S. laws and regulations on pesticides in food,” said Sonya Lunder, EWG Senior Analyst. Some of the chemicals detected on strawberries are linked to cancer, reproductive and developmental damage, hormone disruption and neurological problems according to the nonprofit environmental research organization. Strawberries were once a seasonal crop, but with the heavy use of pesticides, yields grew stretching the fruit’s growing season.

EWG created the Dirty Dozen list to inform and guide consumers on the top twelves fruits and vegetables with the highest pesticide loads. On the other hand, avocados remain at the top of EWG’s Clean Fifteen, with less than one percent of samples showing any detectable pesticides. “Fruits and vegetables are important for your health,” says Lunder. “But for those on the Dirty Dozen, we recommend buying the organic versions if you want to avoid pesticides on your food.”
EWG has been releasing The Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce every year since 2004. Their analysis is based on results of more than 35,200 samples tested by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration.

Tullahoma Locally Grown:  Your Market is Open

Good morning.

Your Tullahoma Locally Grown Market is open.

A few days ago, we announced that Fountain Springs Farm introduced Thanksgiving Turkeys for pre-order. They are already starting to fly away. Remember, there is a limited amount, so the sooner you place your order, the better. You will find “Turkey Deposit” listed in the Meat/Turkey category. Be sure to indicate your desired weight between 14-22 lbs when you place your order.

In November, you will receive a turkey close to the weight you requested and pay the balance based on $3.75 per pound. This is a whole turkey with gibblets. Do not worry, we will send reminders closer to November so you do not buy a frozen turkey.

YOUR MARKET IS CURRENTLY OPEN.
Now is a great time to order meat for your weekend cookouts and other items you need for the week. You can order bread, eggs, milk, vegetables, herbs, meat, freshly roasted coffee, candles, and more. Consider a made-to-order loaf of English Breakfast Toasting Bread or a half-dozen Jumbo Pretzel Rolls. Both of these breads are made from scratch on market day.

Your local market closes at noon on Wednesday. Order now before your favorite items run out.

Here is the link to the market: Tullahoma Locally Grown Market

Thank you for your support. Have a great day,
