NEWS THIS WEEK
We have requests from customers that cannot always get out and shop, and those that focus their available funds on purchasing organically grown produce to replace the most polluted products. To meet this over time certain non organically grown items have been added ,by vendors, to the market. Now to clearly indicate the known origin of an item we have a 3 letter indicator.
First two characters: OG = Grown with Natural/Organic methods. CG = Commercially Grown and may have been grown using non organic fertilizers and pesticides.
*Third character: G = Sold by Grower
V = Puchased by grower and being resold as a vendor.

Only a couple notes this week and you can get right to ordering. Kathy at Beehanven would like you to know that she’s been a busy little, well, bee making a ton of beeswax candles for you for Halloween and for gifts for the holidays. She’s sold out of her popular designs quickly in years past, and so this year she’s added some new designs and hopes to have even more ready for you. There are quite a few listed on the website already, and she’ll be adding more in the coming weeks. She’ll also be at our “Meet The Grower” table during our October 29th pickup, so you can meet her and see her many candles in person.
Also, I know a few of you know the Dawsons in Watkinsville, and bring some of their raw Jersey milk home to your pets. They are joining Athens Locally Grown and will be bringing their milk into town on Thursday afternoons, saving you the drive out to their farm. Their milk is not yet on the website as I type this, but check back late Monday or Tuesday to see if we were able to get everything in place for a delivery this week. Some of my favorite pets drink milk from the Dawsons’ cows, and I’m looking forward to bringing some home for my own new kitten.
Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it! You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!
Other Area Farmers Markets
The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market from the Athens Land Trust is open Saturday mornings and their farm stand is open Tuesday afternoons. They have a website too. A new Athens Sunday market has opened up at the Classic Center, every Sunday from 11 to 4 now through October. They have a website here: http://www.sundaycentermarket.com. The Comer Farmers Market is open in downtown Comer on Saturday mornings. The Oconee County farmers market is open Saturday mornings in front of the Oconee County Courthouse in Watkinsville. The Shields Ethridge Cultivator Market is held monthly in Jefferson. If you know of any markets operating, please let me know.
All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
Princeton Farm Fresh: The Market isOpen
One sign of oncoming Fall is the planting of Garlic and Onions for a Summer crop. On this long weekend, we have added compost, and chicken litter to our ground. I tilled it in and Hannah and I planted 400 square feet of one or our most favorite crops. All of our crops (broccoli, spinach, peas, kale, beets, carrots and radishes) are in now and all we have to do is wait for them to mature and harvest. Personally I would rather grow in the Fall and Spring. The temps are so much easier to accomplish tasks in. Just this weekend we have shored up some of our leaking water issues, planted, and moved sheep.
See you all on Friday,
Angela
